Video 00047 Formulas_Add 20 minutes to TIME value

How do you add 20 minutes to a time value in Microsoft Excel?

What is the difference between a time value and a date & time value?

There’s a lot of confusion about data and time values in Excel but it’s easy to learn!

A date value is an integer (i.e. a number without decimal values like 42241).

time value is a decimal (i.e. 0.5 = noon. Closer to midnight looks like this 0.94).

We format these values to make them look like readable date and time values:

  • 25/08/2015   =   42241                           Date without a time value
  • 12:00:00 PM =  0.5                                   Time without a date is a fraction of 1 day
  • 25/08/2015  12:00:00 PM =  42241.5    Date & Time (noon on August 25th, 2015)
